Knorr-Bremse launches next phase of its climate strategy with a commitment to climate neutrality from 2021 onwards

  • Knorr-Bremse renews its commitment to ESG excellence with a strong focus on its renewed climate strategy

Knorr-Bremse, the global market leader for braking systems and other rail and commercial vehicle systems today announced a renewed, ambitious climate strategy. Knorr-Bremse will invest in energy efficiency and own generation of renewable energy. In parallel the company will increase its purchase of renewable energy, green electricity products and certificates. With this Knorr-Bremse will halve its CO2 emissions by 2030 in accordance with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and beyond this commits to climate-neutrality across all global operations from 2021 onwards.

Knorr-Bremse AG presents strong preliminary FY19 results – Aims for climate neutrality in 2021

  • Guidance 2019 fully achieved: Group and both divisions performing to plan
  • Proof of resilience: Order intake up by 0.9% to 7,066 mEUR after strong Q4 (+10.2%)
  • Dynamic revenue growth: Group revenues up by 4.8% to 6,937 mEUR (2018: 6,616 mEUR), both segments outgrew their respective markets: RVS +5.6% and CVS +3.8%
  • Continued profit growth: 12,8% increase in reported EBITDA to 1,329 mEUR (2018: 1,178 mEUR), 8.2% increase in operating EBITDA to 1,303 mEUR (2018: 1,204 mEUR), operating EBITDA margin increase to 18.8% from 18.4% in previous year
  • Guidance for 2020: Solid outlook for 2020 despite downturn in truck production, revenues 6,500 - 6,900 mEUR, operating EBITDA margin corridor 18.0% - 19.0%, assuming limited Covid-19 impact and stable economic and political conditions, China business currently recovering and global supply chain has remained stable
  • Company to become carbon neutral by 2021: Enhanced focus on energy efficiency, green electricity self-production and procurement to halve its CO2 emissions by 2030, remainder to be offset by high quality certificates

Knorr-Bremse, the global market leader for braking and other systems for rail and commercial vehicles, today reported strong preliminary full-year 2019 results, with total revenues up 4.8% and reported EBITDA margin up 140bp to 19.2%.

With the acquisition of Sheppard, Knorr-Bremse is broadening its international position in the field of steering systems, having already achieved a major expansion in Asia with the acquisition of the commercial vehicle steering division of Hitachi Automotive Systems in Japan in spring 2019.

Improving traffic safety: Kiepe Electric to equip trams in Hanover with collision avoidance systems

  • Kiepe Electric to retrofit collision avoidance systems with components from Bosch Engineering to 50 light rail vehicles (LRVs) run by Hanover mass transit operator
  • Radar and camera sensors scan the area in front of the vehicle
  • Driver assistance system warns the driver and activates the brakes if a collision is imminent

Kiepe Electric, a subsidiary of Knorr-Bremse, the global market leader for braking systems and a leading supplier of other rail and commercial vehicle subsystems, has won an order from Hanover mass transit operator ÜSTRA to equip 50 light rail vehicles with collision avoidance systems. Following a successful field trial of a vehicle fitted with the system, further TW3000 vehicles are due to be retrofitted in 2020.

Ready to roam the Land of the Great Steppe: Knorr-Bremse to service braking systems of Alstom locomotive fleet in Kazakhstan

  • Knorr-Bremse Russia and Alstom Kazakhstan have signed a comprehensive 25-year service agreement for up to 200 double-section freight locomotives and 95 passenger locomotives in Kazakhstan
  • The service agreement was signed in Berlin on occasion of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s visit to the German capital
  • By providing brake equipment and servicing, Knorr-Bremse will help connect major cities and serve international trade routes in the world’s ninth-largest country – bolstering faster, safer and more reliable transport of goods and passengers

Knorr-Bremse, the world’s leading manufacturer of braking systems and supplier of additional subsystems for rail and commercial vehicles, has signed a comprehensive service agreement with Alstom. Until 2051, Knorr-Bremse’s RailServices unit will maintain the brake systems of up to 200 double-section freight locomotives and 95 passenger locomotives operated by Kazakhstan’s national railway company KTZ. The collaboration will help to strengthen the 2.7 million square-kilometer Central Asian country’s burgeoning role as a cross-continental hub for rail traffic.
